When I attended art school and later teaching at Foundation and Degree level, the methodology commonly employed was to avoid teaching anything tangible for fear that it would inhibit creativity. ‘Express yourself’ I would often hear as a student which left most of us rather bemused and later as an educator, frustration at the lack of ability from staff to actually teach something to the students.
This course gives me the opportunity to address this by providing skill based learning, from concept, composition and drawing to what supports to use, priming, grounds, understanding paint and mediums, mixing strings and the methods used in indirect painting, imprimatura, underpainting, grisaille, glazing as well as direct painting techniques. It is a very informal set up and you work alongside myself building a body of work that is based on hard work and reasoning resulting in an exhibition at the end of the year.
Whether you are a student who finds themselves on a fine art course with a serious lack of painting and drawing going on (John Moores nod nod wink wink!!!), an artist who wants to up their game or a beginner who fancies themselves as a painter, the aim is to show that anybody can make great paintings, you just need to know a few tricks of the trade.
So if you are interested in being part of the gang then please message me for more details.
